Marshal Lee F. Isbell died after being shot three weeks earlier by an intoxicated man.
On July 14, Marshal Isbell was making his evening rounds when he encountered the suspect on Main Street. Because the suspect was familiar to him, Marshal Isbell placed him in a vehicle to await the return of some friends. When Marshal Isbell returned a few minutes later, the inebriated man was bothering customers in a nearby store. The suspect was placed under arrest and was being escorted to jail when he pulled a pistol and shot Marshal Isbell in the hip. The suspect was preparing for a second shot when he was overpowered by citizens. The suspect was convicted of second-degree murder, incarcerated, and paroled in 1926. Marshal Isbell lived in agony for three weeks before dying of peritonitis. He was survived by his wife and several children and is buried in Richfield City Cemetery.
