Officer Anderson, 60, was murdered by a Utah State Prison inmate he was escorting to the University Hospital’s orthopedic clinic in Salt Lake City. While alone with the prisoner in a medical exam room, the officer’s handgun was taken from him and he was shot in the head. The suspect then fled and stole a vehicle at gunpoint. He was located several hours later and recaptured following a high-speed chase to 1700 S. Redwood Road, where he attempted to take several hostages. Sergeant Anderson was married, the father of five children, and grandfather of 16 grandchildren. His son Shawn serves as a corrections officer. Sergeant Anderson is buried in Bluffdale City Cemetery. His bronze name plaque is sponsored by the Utah Department of Corrections.

To the family of officer Stephen R. Anderson, i am so sorry for your loss. From that day on people will always remember him as a great man and a hero to most.May god be with you.
To Stephen’s immediate family and to his extended family, (of which I am one), I miss knowing that his smiling face will no longer be seen at Anderson family reunions here in this life. That was taken from all of us. We will rejoice when we are able to later reunite with him, a good and worthy man. Be strong through the trials to come and stay true to the beliefs that Stephen held on to. May God be with you.
To the family of officer Stephen R. Anderson, I was in court the day this horrible incident took place and felt the pain an sorrow from his fellow officers. I am still so saddened by the senseless loss of such an outstanding man. My mother lives on the other side of the tracks from your home and everytime I drive by I think of you and the grief you have gone through and probably still are until this case is complete.
